SNSD’s growing popularity in Japan is now proven by the numbers behind the sales and records achieved by the girls. According to the mid-year summary for Japan’s Oricon chart, the sales for SNSD’s singles, DVDs, and other merchandise totaled over 809,000, generating over $32 million USD in revenue. This feat also helped the girl group grab the number 5 spot on the overall sales chart for the first half of 2011, and the number 1 spot on the sales chart for overseas singers.
On June 1st, SNSD released their first full Japanese album, “Girls’ Generation”. Over 230,000 copies of the album were sold in the first week, boosting SNSD to the number 1 spot on the Oricon weekly charts for that week.
Grabbing the number 1 to 4 spots were all Japanese artists – AKB48 with 3.77 million copies ($82 million USD), Arashi with 1.74 million copies ($81 million USD), EXILE with 1 million copies ($57 million USD), and Namie Amuro with 630,000 copies ($34 million USD).
Additionally, TVXQ ranked number 4 on the singles sales chart, while KARA placed third on the DVD sales chart.
