Girls’ Generation’s music video for the Korean version of “The Boys” has reached 50 million views on YouTube. Released on October 18th last year, the music video has proven to be a hit with its powerful music and choreography, as well as the individualized outfits worn by each of the nine members. ”The Boys” was also Girls’ Generation’s first introduction to the American public with their television debut in January, where they performed the song on the “Late Show with David Letterman” and “Live! with Kelly”.

“The Boys” is now the fourth Girls’ Generation music video to surpass 50 million views on YouTube. “Oh!” is at 52 million, the dance version of “MR. TAXI” at 55 million, and “Gee” tops the list with 78 million views as the most viewed K-Pop video on YouTube.

A British daily, ‘The Guardian’ recommended Girls’ Generation’s ‘The Boys’.

On March 14th, in the song introduction corner of ‘The Guardian’ called ‘Now Listening: Reader Playlist’, the main artist selected for this week is none other than our 9 beautiful angels. Every week, this corner invites a reader to recommend the songs they have been listening to.

Along with the music video of ‘The Boys’, Guardian also stated, “Girls’ Generation, having already conquered Asia, are currently taking first steps to cracking the west with their latest single ‘The Boys’. Eschewing the standard four-member lineup of typical girl groups, Korea’s finest boast nine impeccably groomed, perfectly pitched and exquisitely choreographed young ladies who deal exclusively in hypnotically catchy numbers. Less a band, more a force of nature.”

Supearls and Girls’ Generation have met. On an upcoming episode of SBS “Survival KPOP Star”, the meeting between Girls’ Generation and Supearls, who rearranged and showed a perfect performance of “The Boys” in a past episode, will be revealed.

Girls’ Generation made a surprise visit to contestants who were chosen to train under SM. The contestants were surprised and expressed their happy hearts by saying, “It feels like my heart is going to stop. I feel more nervous than when I’m auditioning.” In particular, Lee Michelle, Park Jimin, Lee Seungjoo, and Lee Jungmi, the members of Supearls, were chosen in the casting audition finals by Boa and have been receiving special training under SM. Because of this, the meeting between them and Girls’ Generation gained attention.

In reality, Girls’ Generation showed special interest in Supearls before even meeting them. Supearls reunited to sing “The Boys” in front of Girls’ Generation. Upon witnessing their skills, Girls’ Generation members commented, “They sing better than us.” A staff member stated, “With the appearance of Girls’ Generation, the contestants’ fighting spirit towards their goals have become stronger. They will gain an extra week of training during this second time around, unlike the first training period.”

Korean pop’s recent surge onto the international market is far from an overnight phenomenon. The endless chains of idol stars from the land of the morning calm are intensely trained products of the nation’s top entertainment labels.

At the very forefront of this battle frontier of idol groups fighting for supremacy, S.M. Entertainment, founded by singer-turned-music-mogul Soo Man Lee, administers more than half of k-pop’s most popular singers. While the label is responsible for popularizing boy bands like TVXQ, Super Junior, and SHINee that earn screeching cries from female fans in Bangkok to Paris, they’re far from whom we’re checking for.

Then there's Girls’ Generation—S.M. Entertainment’s record-breaking 9-piece girl group. Since its debut in 2007, the band has raked in numerous prestigious awards, and sweetly crooned infectious chart-topping singles (“Gee,” “Genie,” and “Run Devil Run”) that were stupidly addictive enough to stay afloat on top of music countdowns for months.

After dominating music charts, television variety programs, and advertisements (appearing in ads for soft drinks, water filters, fast food chains, clothing, computer games etc.) in their native Korea, the female version of the Wu-Tang went on to garner a similar success in the world’s second biggest music market—Japan.

Thanks to the Internet, and few of S.M.’s senior artists (BoA and TVXQ!) previously paving successful paths, Girls’ Generation’s 2011 debut was greeted with tremendous success. Dropping bombs on Japan’s Oricon Chart with the self-titled debut shooting to number one, and its single (a Japanese version of “Gee”) going double platinum, stateside music powerhouse Interscope decided to get a piece of the action. On November 19, Girls’ Generation will release its U.S. maxi single through Interscope, thus, officially setting off its American debut.

Over the years, Complex has documented Girls’ Generation’s sparkling rise. When S.M. Entertainment held a three-hour-long concert at Madison Square Garden late last month, we had to get down with our favorite k-pop group for a talk. Despite their crammed press junket, Complex was granted to meet all nine members for a discussion pertaining to stardom, men, and a small commentary we previously made, which didn’t sit too well with the Korean public.

SNSD have once again re-written girl group history, this time breaking their own record and setting a new one by being the first girl group to exceed 200,000 in album sales.

On November 10, Gaon Chart, which is a certified music chart, announced that SNSD’s 3rd full album “The Boys” sold 227,994 albums in the month of October. What is even more surprising is the fact that because this album was released on October 19, it means that over 200,000 albums was sold within two weeks.

Gaon Chart explained, “The number of albums sold for SNSD’s recent album is the highest record yet for a girl group. If we look at the overall ranking in album sales throughout the year across all artists, SNSD comes in third place after Super Junior and DBSK.” They also mentioned, “SNSD’s past two album, 2nd full album “OH!” and 3rd mini-album “Hoot”, holds album sales records of 197,934 and 163,066 respectively.”

They also added, “Over the past year, with the increase of the K-Pop boom, the overall album sales of Korean idols have increased dramatically. Before the K-Pop boom struck, most albums were sold through fans living in Korea. But now international fans have started ordering albums through Korean record stores online.”

For the month of October, after SNSD on the album chart was Kim Hyun Joong in second place with his 2nd mini-album “Lucky”, selling 94,784 copies. In third place was international super stars JYJ, who have recently successfully finished their first solo concert in Spain and Germany, selling 81,867 copies of their album “In Heaven”.

Gaon Chart’s album sales is calculated by subtracting the wholesale quantities (the number of albums sold) from the total amount in the corresponding warehouses of each record label, then the final value is calculated by aggregating the figures.

The top two artists with the highest records in album sales this year are: Super Junior, selling 329,035 albums with their 5th full album “Mr. Simple”, and DBSK selling 244,128 albums with “Why (Keep Your Head Down)”.

On the 7th of November 2011, Girls’ Generation’s third full-length album, “The Boys”, managed to surpass 100, 000 in album sales.
Girls’ Generation’s album was released on the 19th of October, and in just 17 days, has sold more than 100, 000 copies of the album. The third album did fantastically well, and just on the 6th of November alone, sold 7,364 albums.

From the 31st of October to the 6th of November, “The Boys” sold 24, 398 albums.

This is a remarkable feat as Girls’ Generation’s previous albums have never passed 100, 000 albums in sales this quickly. Girls’ Generation’s previous full-length album “Oh!”, took 28 days to surpass 100, 000 albums in sales, and the 11 days difference shows that Girls’ Generation is indeed getting more popular.

Although without any promotional activity, Girls’ Generation 3rd album ‘The Boys’ had managed to secure 2nd spot on Japan’s Oricon Chart.

From October 24th to November 30th, Girls’ Generation’s ‘The Boys’ recorded sales of 21,227 copies and that sales figure put the girls at no.2 on Oricon’s Weekly Album Chart for first week of November.

The import edition of the album will only be available in the Japanese market from November 5th onwards. Since their comeback, the girls have been focussing on their Korean promotional activities currently and the amazing feat that they have achieved in Japan with no promotional activities is attracting huge attention.

Meanwhile, Girls’ Generation have proven their dominance by conquering various music charts and music programs.
